Chinese New Year
It is one of the most striking events of the year. It is staged by the Chinese community in Nakhon Sawan City and Bangkok’s Chinatown. The holiday can last for fifteen days.
Among the most important is the ‘Songkran’ or Thai New Year. It is celebrated in a big way in Chiang Mai (perhaps the place that best represents this party), Hua Hin, Khaosan Road, Silom Road, Bangkok, Pattaya and Phra Pradaeng.
It is celebrated on the full moon of the twelfth month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar (usually mid-November). People gather in lakes, rivers or canals to release the krathongs adrift. These are small baskets decorated and constructed with banana leaves that imitate the shape of the lotus flower, illuminated with candles to revere the Buddha with light.
