Buddhist temples, riverbed carvings and jungle waterfalls — discover Phnom Kulen, a remote mountain and plateau that long ago seated the Khmer empire. Hop aboard a mountain bike and follow a guide on a challenging ride through dense woods, small villages, and across streams. Pay respects to the largest reclining Buddha in Cambodia and do a double-take when you come across a lifelike sandstone elephant.

Angkor-tour14We will pick you up at your hotel and transfer to our bike shop in central Siem Reap to start your day. During a safety briefing, get fitted for a helmet and mountain bike and then climb aboard an air-conditioned van for a winding 90-minute drive to Phnom Kulen (aka Kulen Mountain or Kulen Plateau), part of Phnom Kulen National Park in northwestern Cambodia.

Hear about the history of Phnom Kulen, a massive plateau covered with hills, considered the birthplace of the Khmer empire during the Angkorian period (802-1432 AD). Razed by war and neglected for Phnom-Kulen-Mountainyears, Phnom Kulen contains a trove of archaeological finds, including caves, sculpted riverbeds and ancient temples. Today, the region is a popular getaway destination for local Cambodians.

Upon arrival in the park, get your heart rate going by huffing up steep steps to Wat Preah Ang Thom, a Buddhist temple, and gaze at the largest reclining Buddha in all of Cambodia.

Phnom-Kulen-Mountain-4After this warm-up, hop aboard your bike and follow your guide to begin your challenging 24-mile journey. Start off on a slight incline and pedal along a dirt road onto an uneven fire trail. From there, you’ll hit a maze of sandstone beds, tree roots and streams. (You may have to carry your bike short distances across these streams.)

The terrain gets even trickier when you enter a single-track trail deep in the jungle; keep your ears open for the call of birds. Emerge Phnom-Kulen-Mountain-3onto a clearing and come across a massive sandstone statue of an elephant, flanked by imposing lion statues.

Continue on more single-track paths, wider trails used by cow-drawn carts and pass through more thickets of woods, admiring views of rolling hills and cashew plantations along the way. Visit one of the many small temples that dot the landscape and learn about the ongoing archaeological excavations into the ancient kingdom.

Phnom-Kulen-Mountain-2Take snack breaks, including a stop at a tiny and remote community of wooden houses. Your van will meet you at intervals with refreshments during your bike ride.

After completing a loop, reward your efforts and hunger pangs with a tasty lunch by a waterfall (Khmer fare prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients). Your guide shows you linga carvings in the riverbed, Hindu images and inscriptions more than 1,000 years old.

Cool off with a swim, and then enjoy the easy thrill of biking down the plateau-mountain to a dirt road, where your van awaits to take you back to Siem Reap.
